How to Start a Watch Collection
Building a watch collection with purpose: the three-watch collection, setting goals, buying slowly and keeping track of what you own.

Start with a theme or a need
Some collectors chase a brand, a decade, a complication or a color. Others build around how they live. Either way, a little focus helps every new watch earn its place instead of sitting in a drawer.
The three-watch collection
A classic way to start is one watch for each part of life:
- A sports or dive watch for everyday wear, travel and water
- A dress watch for weddings, interviews and evenings
- A fun or tough watch: a G-Shock, a field watch or a colorful microbrand
Buy slowly, learn constantly
- Try watches on before you buy and give yourself time to be sure
- Read, watch reviews and ask other collectors
- Buy the best example you can afford rather than several compromises
- Don't be afraid to sell or trade watches that don't get worn
Keep track of it
