Find out their style quietly
Notice what they already wear: big or small, gold or steel, leather or bracelet, sporty or dressy. Look at their wrist next to a watch you know the size of, or ask a friend or family member to find out casually.
Safe, versatile choices
- A steel watch on a bracelet with a simple dial works with almost everything
- Medium sizes (about 36 to 40 mm) suit most wrists
- A quartz watch is grab-and-go; an automatic is a little more special for someone who loves craftsmanship
- A classic from a well-known brand is easy to love and easy to exchange
Make it personal
An engraving on the caseback, a date or a short message turns a watch into an heirloom. Check that the caseback can be engraved and that the retailer allows returns on engraved pieces before you commit.
Keep the receipt and warranty card, and ask about sizing: bracelets usually need links removed, which most retailers do for free.
